Nine Steps to Help Promote Socialism
- Learn as much as you can about socialism, democracy, and politics in general. Read from many different sources, don't rely on just one person or organization's opinion.
- Become involved in local politics. Participate in elections and keep an eye out for local rallies or demonstrations.
- Sit down and figure out how much you can afford to spend helping others. Don't just think about, actually sit down with a piece of paper and a pencil/pen/feather quill and figure it out. If your bugget doesn't leave much room for extras, decide exactly how much you are willing to give up. Thirty-dollar new pair of jeans versus curing AIDs in Africa, planting trees in local parks, promoting women's rights, [insert cause of your choice here]?
- Now do the same thing with your time. How much can you spend helping others each week? Each month? Each year?
- Give money to charity. Not just any charity--don't be a generic giver. Find a charity that you really care about, read up on them, follow their work. No matter what you are interested in, there are probably others of the same interests who are out there trying to make the world a better place.
- Carefully consider how to donate your time. Talk to people in your local community about how they contribute. You may hear of surprising opportunities that you would not have thought of on your own. If you have the resources, check out organizations outside of your local area. There are many that would love to have you help out over spring break or for a week or two in summer. Some of them will even be able to pay a portion of your expenses.
- Think about how you can help others and promote socialist values on a daily basis, without going far out of your way. Are there specific people that you could help? Simple tasks that would make other's lives easier?
- Talk to other people. When politics comes up in conversation, make sure to politely express your views. Look for opportunities to discuss your ideas when the topic turns to any issue in which you know socialism could make an impact. Start dialogues with your friends about socialism. Mention it on your online profiles, like at Livejournal, Flickr, Youtube, and MySpace, so other socialists can find you. Put socialism in your interests and tag socialist websites and blogs. Digg socialist news.
- Lastly, seriously consider joining us. Every member brings a unique perspective, location, set of interests and hobbies, and personality to the table. Every member brings us closer to a democratic and socialist nation.
